About Matt

Matt hails from Croydon, a commuter town in Southeast London. David Bowie went to art school there but later described the town as “my nemesis” and “complete concrete Hell.” Matt studied English at University and embarked on a career in banking before thinking better of it, then worked briefly for a photographer before going to the London College of Printing for a postgraduate diploma in periodical journalism. He spent 10 years as a journalist on both sides of the Atlantic, and won awards for his reporting on the U.S. criminal justice system. His best journalistic work was done in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Matt enjoyed interviewing Tony Bourdain, Spike Lee, and James Carville, among others. His work appeared in People Magazine, Salon.com, The Guardian, and as far afield as The Hindu Times in India and the Sydney Morning Herald in Australia. He did a wide range of work from restaurant and film reviews to investigative journalism on corrupt law enforcement officials. He got his U.S. citizenship in 2011.

In 2012 Matt made a career change to cause-related communications. First he developed client relationships with healthcare clients for a London-based creative agency. Then he led communications at nonprofits in London, Oakland, and in New York City, where he has since settled.

Matt doesn’t like the traditional agency model of public relations and strategic communications. He believes clients should work with experienced experts rather than spend their time training up junior staff while the agency owner cashes their checks and disappears after winning the pitch. He founded Matt Davis Communications, Inc. in 2020 with that vision firmly in mind,  and most of his clients come from word-of-mouth recommendations. He keeps his client roster small and prefers to work with organizations and people who genuinely value the difference he makes. The company is licensed and fully insured in the state of New York.

Matt is married to Logan Sachon and they have a 3-year-old son. He serves on the board of New York Squash, the nonprofit affiliate of U.S. squash, which runs a league for more than 800 players in New York City. He also serves on the vestry of Grace Church on Broadway, an episcopal church.
